Authentic Tibetan silver coin (Ga-den tanka in Tibetan), hand stamped with an 8-petaled lotus wheel and the Eight Auspicious Symbols.

The Ga-den tangkas date from c. 1850. This was struck in 1948. Thirteen major varieties in design have been cataloged. In all, there are at least 37 known minor varieties, but possibly 50 or more that could be noted. The obverse of these coins show the eight auspicious symbols in Tibetan Buddhism, orbkra shis rtags brgad in Tibetan: the umbrella of sovereignty, two golden fish of good fortune, amphora of ambrosia, lotus, conch shell, emblem of endless rebirth, banner of victory and wheel of empire. These are usually arrayed around a central lotus. Their actual order and specific designs varied over time. Generously donated by Matt Anderson, the coin comes in a vibrant brocade satchel.
